Skin Discoloration: What Is It and How You Can Treat It?

What Exactly is Skin Discoloration?

Although Skin discoloration IS one of the most common skin problems, (especially in women) it is not necessarily bad skin. The condition is typically attributed to hormonal changes or may be a cause of skin disorder complications. Any woman who is encountering skin pigmentation problem is probably doing everything in order to make the problem much less visible. Good thing there are several methods that you can use to treat this skin condition.

 Types of Skin Discoloration

Types of skin pigmentation vary depending on the color of pigment developed during the process. The most common types of discoloration of skin include:

Melasma. Often referred to as the “mask of pregnancy” because this type of skin pigmentation usually happens when hormonal changes occur, typically during pregnancy. Melasma is the darkening of the skin on the face and neck area, but can sometimes affect other areas like the armpits, etc.

Venous Stasis. A skin condition caused by blood pooling around the leg area, Venous Stasis does not only make the skin darker, but may also cause leg swelling.

Vitiligo. This condition results in white patches on the skin. Vitiligo involves melanin malfunction, which can start with small patches and then spread out as the condition advances.

Cyanosis. A blush skin discoloration that develop due to oxygen shortage in the blood. This condition may be a cause of toxins present in the blood or abnormal hemoglobin levels.

Rosacea. This skin condition is characterized by red spots on the face as well as very prominent blood vessels and small bumps that lack sebum or pus. Although this condition is not curable, it can be easily controlled using topical creams and other special dermatological treatments.

What Causes Skin Discoloration?

There are many various reasons why abnormal skin pigmentation happens. As a matter of fact, each type of skin discoloration condition is caused by a particular abnormality in your body.

Diseases are among the most common causes of discoloration of the skin. For instance, the yellowing of the skin can be a result of liver disease, while white patches on the skin are sometimes caused by albinism. Cyanosis, on the other hand, is caused by Cyanotic heart disease.

Abnormal skin pigmentation may also be caused by medication intake. As a side effect, some drugs may cause hyperpigmentation or skin darkening while other drugs like Glutathione may cause skin whitening as a side effect.

Certain conditions like pregnancy may also cause skin darkening like melasma due to hormonal changes and increased melanocyte activity. At times, discoloration of the skin may also happen when you make certain diet changes. For instance, when your diet contains increased amounts of psoralens, a kind of food enzyme, you may be more susceptible to sun damage that may cause hyperpigmentation of the skin.

The kind of treatment to use when you have skin pigmentation depends on the type of discoloration you have and the span of time you have had the condition.

For instance, if the case is melasma and you’ve only have it for a few months, then you would probably get positive results by using skin exfoliating products like hydroquinone. You may also visit your dermatologist for a monthly chemical peel, which is known to make your skin brighter with a more even tone.

Over-the-counter products like Tretinoin, Glycolic, and Lactic Acid are also known as effective treatment for hyperpigmentation of the skin. You should also make sure to use sunblock or sunscreen products whenever you go out of the sun in order to prevent further skin damage.

For pigmentation that is present for more than a year, you may have to require laser therapy like IPL treatment. However, there are topical solutions that are effective in removing skin discoloration, even if they are already there for more than 12 months.

For instance, the company Seacret produces dead sea skin care products that have been making big waves in the skin care industry. The flagship product from their Dead Sea arsenal is called the Recover Mask, which has gathered a huge number of followers because of its effectiveness against discoloration of the skin.

Here is a testimonial from a woman who was suffering from Rosacea and was completely floored from the results of the first of eight treatments of this anti-aging product.

This product has been called "One of the most technologically advanced products in the skin care industry.

Another breakthrough product is NeriumAD, an ointment that effectively fights skin problems including severe discoloration of the skin.

You may ask your doctor if these topical treatments alone can be an effective solution or he may ask you to pair these Recovery Mask or Nerium with other skin treatments like Fraxel or IPL.
